President’s Message

First I want to thank the Middle East Spine Society (MESS) executive members for allowing me to serve as President and to be a part of a society that not only gives knowledge back, but allows friendships to be created within the region. I am following the footsteps of some great leaders in the field of spine practice, namely, Prof. Mehmet Zileli, Godfather of the society, Prof. Abd-Elhafiz Shehab-Eldien, and Prof. Salman Sharif. MESS was formed back in 2010 by individuals who were motivated and persistent in pursuing a goal of success for the spine profession in the Middle East. I intend to keep that goal going.

The next two years comes as a challenge for myself and the executive board as we continue to develop and improve spine practice that reflect our excellence and are beneficial to our members. The proposed activities will be scheduled across the Middle East region throughout the year and consist of basic and advanced knowledge.  Both I and our board are excited about the opportunity to give something back to our members.

The second challenge we will have is increasing our membership. Like with other societies, many of our members are entering the twilight of their careers and are looking forward to a much deserved work and retirement. With that said we need to bring some youth into the association. That already starts at the start of this year. We already added active youth members from many countries into our executive board. We will continually add new active members and are always growing, are the ones that thrive and have the most activities. If any member needs any help or ideas, me as well as any member of the board, are always there (so to speak) to answer any questions.

Several opportunities will be available throughout the year to meet for education as well as networking with individuals within our society.  This society has a wealth of knowledge, and when combined with the networking opportunities, has helped create long term relationships which have been priceless. Our meetings, newsletters and our case discussion email group are always there. Discussions never end.

For our current members and perspective members I want to assure you that my intention, and that of the board, is to grow without limits.  We will stay focused on remaining as a benefit to our members while also staying current with standards, updates and requirements of spine practice.  I look forward to a productive successful presidency and invite each of you to participate, and most important become involved.

Prof. of Neurosurgery, Cairo University
